Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: Supporting Your Body Through Every Stage

Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable transformations the human body can experience. From the moment a baby begins to grow, a mother’s body starts adapting—her posture changes, her center of gravity shifts, her joints become more mobile, and her muscles and ligaments take on new demands.
These changes are completely natural, but that doesn’t mean they always feel comfortable.
This is where chiropractic care can be a valuable part of a healthy pregnancy.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, we believe pregnancy should be supported—not simply endured. Our goal is to help moms-to-be feel comfortable, mobile, strong, and confident as their bodies adapt throughout pregnancy.
Your Body Is Changing—And Your Spine Is Along for the Ride
As the baby grows, the additional weight in the front of the body gradually shifts a woman's center of gravity. This can alter posture and increase stress on the muscles, joints, pelvis, and lower back. Pregnancy hormones also increase ligament flexibility, which allows the pelvis to adapt for childbirth but can contribute to feelings of instability or discomfort.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recognizes back pain as one of the most common problems during pregnancy and notes that changes in posture, abdominal muscles, body weight, and joint flexibility can all contribute.¹
Chiropractic care is designed to help the musculoskeletal system adapt to these changes.
Rather than waiting until discomfort becomes overwhelming, many women choose chiropractic care throughout pregnancy as part of their overall wellness routine.
Keeping Mom Moving Matters
Movement is important during pregnancy.
For women with uncomplicated pregnancies, ACOG recommends regular physical activity and notes that exercise can reduce back pain, improve fitness, and help prepare the body for labor and childbirth.³
But movement becomes much easier when the body feels good.
When a pregnant woman is experiencing stiffness, discomfort, or restricted movement, chiropractic care may complement an active lifestyle by addressing musculoskeletal concerns while she continues appropriate pregnancy-safe exercise.
Think of it as part of a bigger picture:
Chiropractic care + movement + strength + nutrition + rest + appropriate prenatal care = a more supported pregnancy.
It's Not Just About the Back
One of the biggest misconceptions about pregnancy chiropractic care is that it is simply about "fixing back pain."
Pregnancy affects the entire musculoskeletal system.
As the pelvis, spine, hips, and surrounding muscles adapt to the growing baby, women may experience discomfort in several areas, including:
Low back
Pelvis and hips
Sacroiliac region
Mid-back
Neck and shoulders
Rib cage
Legs and surrounding musculature
A pregnancy-focused chiropractic visit should look at the whole person, not simply chase the location of the pain.
The goal is to help the body move as comfortably and efficiently as possible while respecting the unique needs of pregnancy.
Chiropractic Care Should Be Pregnancy-Specific
Pregnancy is not the time for a "one-size-fits-all" approach.
A woman's body is changing throughout all three trimesters, and chiropractic care should change with it.
That means appropriate positioning, gentle and pregnancy-adapted techniques, consideration of the stage of pregnancy, and communication with the patient's broader healthcare team when appropriate.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, we take the time to understand where you are in your pregnancy and what your body is experiencing before determining what type of care is appropriate.
Comfort, safety, and individualized care come first.
What About Safety?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is widely regarded as a gentle, safe, and effective way to support a woman's changing body. With our chiropractor who is trained in pregnancy-specific techniques, adjustments can be comfortably adapted to every stage of pregnancy and to the unique needs of each mother. Pregnancy places remarkable demands on the spine, pelvis, muscles, and joints. Chiropractic care helps support the body's ability to adapt to those changes, promoting better mobility, reducing tension and discomfort, and helping expectant mothers feel more comfortable throughout their pregnancy.
Research examining chiropractic and spinal manipulation during pregnancy has found very few reported adverse events, with those reported generally being minor and temporary.⁴ This growing body of evidence supports chiropractic care as a valuable conservative approach for many expectant mothers. Perhaps most importantly, chiropractic care is not about forcing the body to change. It is about gently working with the body and supporting the incredible physiological changes already taking place.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, pregnancy care is tailored specifically for expectant mothers. We utilize gentle, pregnancy-appropriate techniques and positioning designed to keep mom comfortable while supporting healthy movement and function throughout pregnancy. And while every pregnancy is unique, chiropractic care can be a wonderful addition to a mother's prenatal wellness routine—working alongside her OB/GYN or midwife to help her feel her best as she prepares for the arrival of her baby.
What About Safety for Baby? The answer is reassuring: when prenatal chiropractic care is provided by a qualified chiropractor using appropriate pregnancy-specific techniques, like our doctor, it is considered a gentle and safe form of care for the mother and her developing baby. A prenatal chiropractic adjustment is not performed on the baby. Chiropractic care works with Mom's spine, pelvis, joints, and surrounding muscles and tissues to help her body adapt to the remarkable physical changes of pregnancy. Specialized techniques are gentle, controlled, and specifically adapted to accommodate the growing belly and the changing biomechanics of the expectant mother. In other words, your baby isn't being adjusted—Mom is being supported.
A healthy, comfortable mom has more opportunity to move, rest, exercise, and enjoy the remarkable experience of pregnancy—and that's something worth supporting.
Preparing the Body for the Journey Ahead
Pregnancy isn't only about getting to the delivery date.
It's about preparing a woman's body for everything that comes with pregnancy, labor, delivery, and eventually caring for a newborn.
As the body changes, maintaining mobility and addressing musculoskeletal discomfort can help a woman continue participating in the activities that support her overall health.
And after delivery, the body begins another enormous transition.
The physical demands of feeding, carrying, rocking, lifting, sleeping in new positions, and repeatedly bending over a crib can place an entirely different set of stresses on the spine and pelvis.
That is why chiropractic care can be valuable not only during pregnancy, but also as part of a woman's postpartum wellness plan.
Pregnancy Is Beautiful. You Don't Have to Be Miserable.
Pregnancy will always involve some degree of change, fatigue, pressure, and discomfort. That's part of the journey.
But discomfort doesn't have to be something you simply accept as unavoidable.
Your body is doing extraordinary work.
Supporting that body with appropriate movement, nutrition, rest, prenatal care, and pregnancy-specific chiropractic care can help you navigate those changes with greater comfort and confidence.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, we love working with moms throughout pregnancy and helping them stay active, comfortable, and connected to their changing bodies.
If you're expecting, we'd love to be part of your pregnancy-support team.
Chiropractic care should be individualized to each patient and is not intended to replace prenatal care from your OB/GYN, midwife, or other qualified maternity provider.
