Chiropractic Care for Newborns: A Gentle Start to a Healthy Life
There is something extraordinary about a newborn. In just a few short minutes, a baby goes from the protected environment of the womb to the outside world—a transition that requires an incredible amount of adaptation.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, we believe those first weeks and months are an important time to support a baby's developing body. Gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care can be one part of a newborn's overall wellness team, particularly when care is provided by a chiropractor specifically trained and experienced in working with infants.
Birth Is a Big Event for a Little Body
Whether a baby is born vaginally or by C-section, birth can involve significant forces and positioning. A baby's head and neck may rotate, flex, extend, and compress as the baby moves through the birth process. Assisted deliveries can involve additional mechanical forces.
That doesn't mean something is necessarily "wrong" with a newborn after birth. Babies are remarkably resilient.
But sometimes parents notice that their baby:
Prefers turning the head to one side
Seems uncomfortable in certain positions
Has difficulty latching on one side
Holds the head with a noticeable tilt
Seems unusually tense through the neck or body
Has difficulty finding a comfortable position
Develops an early positional preference
These observations deserve attention—not alarm.
For example, congenital muscular torticollis, a condition involving an infant's head and neck position, can become apparent shortly after birth. Pediatric guidelines emphasize early identification and intervention because earlier care tends to produce better outcomes.¹ ²
This is one area where a careful newborn assessment can be valuable.
What Does Chiropractic Care Look Like for a Newborn?
First, let's clear up a common misconception.
Chiropractic care for a newborn should not look like chiropractic care for an adult.
A baby's body is developing rapidly, and an infant's examination and care should be adapted accordingly. The goal isn't to "crack" or force a baby's spine.
Instead, an experienced pediatric chiropractor uses extremely gentle, age-appropriate techniques and evaluates how the baby's body is moving and functioning.
At Folta Family Chiropractic, our approach is centered around gentleness, precision, and respect for the baby's developing nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
Sometimes the most important part of an infant visit isn't an adjustment at all—it is simply observing how the baby moves, turns, feeds, and responds.
Supporting Comfortable Movement
Newborns spend an enormous amount of time developing their ability to control their head, neck, trunk, and limbs.
When an infant consistently favors one direction, has restricted movement, or develops a postural preference, addressing it early may help support more symmetrical movement.
This is particularly important because conditions such as torticollis can be associated with positional head asymmetry. Pediatric recommendations emphasize early recognition, caregiver education, positioning, movement, and appropriate referral when needed.¹ ³
Chiropractic care can sometimes be used as part of a collaborative approach, alongside the baby's pediatrician, pediatric physical therapist, lactation consultant, or other appropriate healthcare professionals.
What About Feeding and Breastfeeding?
For new parents, feeding can be one of the biggest challenges.
Sometimes a baby seems to latch comfortably on one side but struggles on the other. Other babies consistently turn their head in one direction or appear uncomfortable when positioned a certain way.
There can be many reasons for feeding difficulties, and chiropractic care should never be presented as a cure-all.
However, assessing an infant's movement and musculoskeletal function may be worthwhile when a baby demonstrates obvious positional preferences or difficulty moving comfortably.
A good pediatric chiropractor should also know when a feeding concern belongs with a pediatrician, lactation consultant, speech-language pathologist, or another specialist.
The goal is not to replace other providers. It's to work together.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Newborns?
For parents, this is naturally one of the first questions that comes to mind—and we think that's a wonderful question to ask.
The simple answer is that chiropractic care for babies is not "adult chiropractic care in miniature form." Babies are evaluated and cared for very differently from adults, with techniques specifically adapted to their tiny, developing bodies.
Chiropractic is also far more diverse than the traditional "cracking" or high-velocity adjustments that many people picture when they hear the word chiropractic. Our pediatric chiropractor utilizes a vast array of gentle techniques, including extremely light-touch or tonal approaches, gentle mobilization, instrument-assisted techniques, and other age-appropriate methods. The technique selected depends on the baby's age, development, examination findings, and individual needs.
For a newborn, an adjustment may involve little more than a gentle fingertip contact or subtle input—nothing like the forceful adjustments sometimes associated with adult chiropractic care. There is no need to twist, force, or "crack" a baby's spine.
Our philosophy is to meet babies where they are. Their bodies are remarkably adaptable, and our role is simply to provide gentle, thoughtful input that respects their developing nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
Of course, safety always begins with proper screening. A thorough history including baby’s birth story and examination help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate and which techniques, if any, are best suited for that particular baby. When something falls outside the scope of chiropractic care, we believe in working alongside the child's pediatrician or referring to the appropriate healthcare professional.
Every baby is different. Every baby deserves an individualized approach. And when it comes to newborn chiropractic care, gentle, precise, age-appropriate care is the name of the game.
Your Baby Doesn't Have to Have a Problem
One of the things we love most about working with newborns is that chiropractic care doesn't have to begin because something is wrong.
Parents may simply want their baby's movement and development assessed.
A newborn examination can provide an opportunity to look at things such as:
Head and neck movement
Symmetry and positional preferences
Muscle tone and movement patterns
Spinal and pelvic mobility
Overall musculoskeletal function
Feeding-related positioning concerns
Developmental movement patterns
And sometimes the best outcome of an examination is hearing:
"Your baby looks great. Here's what you can watch for as they grow."
That's a win, too.
A Gentle Beginning
The first months of a baby's life are filled with extraordinary growth and change.
From learning to control the head, to rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking, a child's body is constantly adapting.
Our philosophy at Folta Family Chiropractic is simple:
Give babies the gentlest care possible, respect the incredible ability of their bodies to develop, and never lose sight of the bigger picture.
Chiropractic care should complement—not replace—regular pediatric care and other appropriate healthcare services.
If you're curious whether your newborn could benefit from an evaluation, we'd be happy to talk with you about what an infant chiropractic visit looks like and whether it is appropriate for your baby.
